Chesapeake BEG Business Office
Chesapeake BEG Warehouse
A Brief History
Chesapeake's Blankin Equipment Gorup (BEG), a division of Chesapeake Systems, LLC was founded in 1908 by Charles Haynes as a combination Consulting Engineering and Manufacturer’s Representative business. The company was Hoffman Specialty’s first representative in the country. Merrill Blankin started with Blankin in 1917 and by 1922 had acquired enough shares that the company was incorporated as Blankin Equipment Corporation, but trading as Haynes-Blankin until the early 1940’s. By 1942, Merrill Blankin owned a large majority of shares in the company and began trading only as Blankin Equipment.
Merrill Blankin was a dedicated leader in all phases of his life. He served regionally and then as the National President of ASHVE, the predecessor to ASHRAE. He had his P.E. license, as did many on his staff. Other prolific product lines such as Wheeler Economy Pumps, Domestic Pumps of Shippensburg, PA, and McDonnell and Miller Level and Flow Controls were part of the Blankin offering, along with many other supporting product lines. As McDonnell and Miller grew as a giant within the industry, the need to support distribution marketing channels became a necessary priority. By the mid-1950’s the consulting end of the business diminished and the sales distribution flourished.
Blankin Equipment Corporation was owned and operated by Merrill Blankin until his death in 1972. At that point, Mr. Blankin’s estate was held in trust for the benefit of Mrs. Blankin and operated by Robert Finn, a long time sales engineer (and Mr. Blankin’s son in law), along with long time office manager Jack Wynne (V.P and General Manager) and Dorothea Wynne (Secretary-Treasurer). In 1987, with the passing of Mrs. Blankin, Donald Wynne, a sales and applications specialist employed since 1973, purchased 100% of the company stock from Mr. Blankin’s heirs. The company has continued to flourish as a Manufacturer’s Representative Distribution agency. In 2012 100% of Blankin’s stock was purchased by Chesapeake Systems L.L.C. based in Hanover Maryland, enabling Blankin to grow as a wholly owned division within an organization of over 80 employees.
Our objective begins by working with Consulting Engineers to becoming the basis of design with the products we represent. Once the project is offered for bidding purposes we negotiate with the contracting firms to obtain an order on the full package of equipment we can offer. After the sale is complete we follow up with all parties involved to ensure that everyone is pleased with the level of service that the entire Blankin team has offered.
